week #1 in an experimental year…

One of my rituals for this new year is to choose a word for the coming year.  My word for 2011 is EXPERIMENT.  You can read more about that here.    To support my EXPERIMENTAL focus, I commit to post the results of a new experiment each Sunday of this year.  I’ll warn you in advance, the movie rights for these Experimental Year post haven’t been sold.  Some of these experiments will seem larger than others.  Some will seem inconsequential – to you.   They won’t be to me though.  What they all represent to me is a willingness to learn, stretch and discover. As always, I welcome your comments, reactions and observations.

This first experiment is VERY basic.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve hated drinking milk.  I’ve tried whole, 2%, skim, soy, rice and almond.  I’ve tried.  It just hasn’t worked for me.   Now that my bones (and the rest of my body) are 52, I’m thinking I can use all the calcium I can get.  So I tried it again.

It’s been years since I drank a glass of milk.  I had some 2% in my ‘fridge, leftover from Mom’s visit.

So I chilled a glass in the freezer.  Then I sucked it up (literally).  And ya know what?  I kinda liked it.  Who knew?

Wow.  All these years of  hatred and disdain ~ released.

Hope all the new tricks this old dog is going to try out this year are THIS easy.  Am off to pick out my official Milk Glass and store it in the freezer – I’m sure that’s what made all the difference.

Yep, I’ll be ready for one of those “Got Milk” ads soon!

  1. The summer between my junior and senior year of high school I joined a teacher and other students from the HS I had attended in Los Angeles on a tour of Europe. One section of the tour took us through Italy, greece and Jugoslavia. We were warned not to drink the milk in those countries. I had traveled enough to know that heeding such advice was a good idea and did so. After leaving Jugoslavia we stayed in Austria for a couple of days. At our first meal I ordered a large glass of milk. It arrived ice cold. I drank it so fast I could hardly taste it so I ordered another. I feel that moment everytime I fill my mouth with cold milk. You are right about the glass from the freezer. The colder the better.

  2. oh Jim, LOVE your recollection of that trip! and thanks to you, when i drink milk, i’ll imagine i’m in Austria. that’ll come in handy during our NC summer heatwaves 🙂

    THANKS for commenting!

  3. I loved milk when I was growing up. But as a grown-up, I went through a I’m-not-a-cow phase & stopping drinking it. I drank soy “milk” for many years until it started making me feel horribly ill. About a year & a half ago, I started drinking milk (non-fat) again & now I can’t live without it. A bowl of cereal just isn’t cereal without MILK!! 🙂

  4. How do you eat brownies or chocolate chip cookies without milk? I’m not one to just swig down a glass of milk on it’s own, but it’s definitely my favorite “chaser” for chocolate !

  5. Ooops! Pardon my apostrophe when I meant to write “on its own”! (My 7th grade English teacher would be so disappointed in me!) I saw the mistake right after I hit the “post comment” button!

  6. @ pjh, i’m liking the nonfat stuff best, too. THANKS for the encouragement!

@amma, USED to eat cereal with yogurt. am free now 🙂

@ML, now i have a whole new way of enjoying brownies & cookies! 🙂

    thanks for commenting, ya’ll!
