taking attendance ~ week five

My word for 2016 is ATTEND.attending girl

Although I don’t think attending is a superpower, some days I wish it was. On those days, I think if one more person promises that he or she has the superpower to right all wrongs and save US from THEM, I daydream about sticking a pencil in my (or someone else’s) eye. On my better days, however, I choose to acknowledge that while I have no superpowers and am responsible TO the World – I’m not responsible FOR it. I’m responsible FOR my life and how I choose to live it.

To that end, I will attend to what and whom I can. And I’ll remember that I don’t have to attend every argument, drama or political whack-o-doodleness to which I’m invited. Each Sunday, I’ll share something here – an image, a poem, a song or maybe even a story that’s helped me attend to what I can that week.

rebecca forrest (2)This is Dr Rebecca Forrest.  Rebecca’s (among many other things) a dentist in New Bern, NC and she knows how to ATTEND to what’s important.  Rebecca is Mom’s dentist.  This week Mom lost another tooth.  If you have an aging parent, you know this isn’t uncommon.  What’s uncommon is a dentist who not only ‘gets’, but suggests palliative, compassionate and respectful care when (not IF) teeth just plain brake off.  I won’t bore you with the details, but I DO want to publically thank, celebrate and honor how Rebecca and her awesome staff TREAT THE WHOLE PATIENT.  If you’re in the New Bern area, I can’t recommend her more highly.

What kind of awesome ATTENDING did you experience this week?

  1. I am trying not to attend to a negative doctor’s comments that try to make me feel guilty about Maurice’s health. He told me tonight in Maurice’s room in Rehab, that having spina bifida and a UTI, which he has recovered from, is very serious and I have to make sure that he does this and that. Also, am I sure I am ready for him to come home, the insurance is running out on Friday, as I wasn’t last time in August. How is it my fault, if the PT Dept. didn’t make sure he was ready? They say he is ready this time and I have seen him walk. Out by the nurse’s station he said, “you have to compose yourself and not be upset. so you can take care of him.” This doctor has, also said everyone has to die from something. Please forgive me for venting, but we are changing doctor’s as soon as we can. We miss our doctors in Whiteville. .

  2. oh Lois, i’m so sad yo hear Maurice is having such a yough time and even more sad that you’re not feeling supported medically. hope you find The Right Doctor for you both – soon! we sure do miss and love you both💜
