taking attendance ~ week 12

My word for 2016 is ATTEND.attending girl

Although I don’t think attending is a superpower, some days I wish it was. On those days, I think if one more person promises that he or she has the superpower to right all wrongs and save US from THEM, I daydream about sticking a pencil in my (or someone else’s) eye. On my better days, however, I choose to acknowledge that while I have no superpowers and am responsible TO the World – I’m not responsible FOR it. I’m responsible FOR my life and how I choose to live it.

To that end, I will attend to what and whom I can. And I’ll remember that I don’t have to attend every argument, drama or political whack-o-doodleness to which I’m invited. Each Sunday (except for the break I took, during Lent), I’ll share something here – an image, a poem, a song or maybe even a story that’s helped me attend to what I can that week.

Alleluia!   It’s great to be back AND my time away from social media was renewing and informing in many ways.  And several shifts have occured.

  1. I’m wearing a watch again.  A few years ago, I began relying on my iPhone IMG_4531to monitor time. That led to my sliding down the slippery slope of stopping to ‘check’ social media/e.mail, etc almost every time I checked The Time.  yowza!  next thing I knew, I’d lost track of The Time I’d initially stopped to ‘check.’  Now, when I want to know what time it is – I look at my watch, Mickey Mouse tells me the time, and I’m back on track.
  2. My relationship with my iPhone has changed dramatically.  Thanks to the reasons stated above, I use my phone to make/receive calls; ‘Google’ for (some) answers; and take pictures.  With a few exceptions, I no longer feel naked when my iPhone isn’t affixed to my body.
  3. My days seem to have more hours.  They certainly at least have more of my ATTENtion.

In short, the most important thing is to remember The Most Important Thing.  Under the noble guise of ‘connecting’, social media became a way to sometimes hide from the Most Important Things to me. No more. So while I’m looking forward to returning to Facebook, Blog-land, Pinterest, etc  – I’m returning with the intention of continuing  to Attend to The Most Important Thing.

What have YOU been attending to lately?

  1. Sewing: I have learned that I CAN sew on knits and make garments again. A joy to make something that fits ME. The landscape: In February I had that long-awaited cataract surgery with corrective lenses. I am now seeing better than I did when I was in the 4th grade. Miraculous. Food: Having YET AGAIN fallen into bad eating habits, I am YET AGAIN working on getting back on track. “We fall and we get up and we fall and we get up and we fall and . . . ” Voting: more important now than ever before.

  2. dear Penny, what a magnificent tapestry of attendance! creating in new ways with your new vision and nourishing your body, spirit and community in (please God, make it so…)such healing ways. thanks for letting us know how you’ve been attending.
